Crocs: the footwear world’s answer to the mullet.
Divisive, unbelievable naff looking, worn by Adam Sandler – it may surprise you that these infamous shoes have shifted more than 300 million pairs worldwide to date. 300 MILLION.
One of the biggest reasons for their enduring popularity, as proud wearers will likely tell you, is their ‘practicality and comfort’. Well don’t listen to anyone who coughs up that excuse anymore because Huffpost now reveals that they may actually be bad for your health.
“Unfortunately Crocs are not suitable for all-day use,” Dr. Megan Leahy of the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, told the website.
Leahy added that the danger of wearing them for lengthy periods of time is because the shoes do not adequately secure the heel: “When the heel is unstable, toes tend to grip which can lead to tendinitis, worsening of toe deformities, nail problems, corns and calluses. The same thing can happen with flip flops or any backless shoes as the heel is not secured.”
Gaining further clarification, HuffPost also spoke to Dr Alex Kor, president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, who gave another damning assessment of Crocs: “Patients are more likely to have foot pain if their shoes bend in the shank.
Labelling them a ‘poster child’ for shoes with a flexible shank, Kor added, “I see patients who come into my office complaining of arch or heel pain and they are wearing Crocs.”
“The only two types of patients that may benefit from wearing Crocs are patients that have a very high arch or those who suffer from excessive edema of their legs and ankle,” Kor said. “But, under no circumstances can I suggest wearing Crocs 8 to 10 hours per day.”
So unless a friend is facing the threat of an actual croc chomping at their toes, don’t believe them when they say it’s practical footwear.
