The fight against revenge porn is gaining traction in the U.S., with incidents likethis fall’s iCloud celebrity nude-photo hack, which (again) underscored the need for stronger legal protection for victims. Yesterday, Illinois helped push the country a little further in the right direction by passing its own law against the nonconsensual release of pornography, joining more than a dozen other states with similar legislation, like California, Texas, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and Colorado, The Daily Dot reports.
Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill into law that goes into effect June 1, 2015, and makes it a Class 4 felony for someone to “distribute private messages without a person’s consent,” according to Illinois outlet KFVS 12. Granted, it’s no national ban, but 2015 might be a good year to pass one, cough, cough, Congress.
